Statistics from a recent study by the National Alliance on Mental Health says that one out of five American adults lives with a mental health condition. One in 25 adults lives with a serious mental health condition. But despite 20% of the population suffering from less than optimal mental health, relatively few people seek treatment or are able to get help. The same study found that only 40% of people with mental health conditions get the help they need &#8211; that\u2019s less than half!\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Untreated mental health issues often get worse over time and can have a very real negative impact on your life. On top of the reduced quality of life and unhappiness that you personally suffer, untreated mental health conditions can lead to:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Loss of joy in hobbies and activities<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Difficulty in relationships<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Difficulty taking care of children<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Increased risk of physical health issues<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hospitalization<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Suicide<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We are not trying to scare you by mentioning suicide. Suicide is the second leading cause of death for people in the United States between the ages of 10 and 34. 90% of people who die by suicide in America lived with a mental health condition.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But Do I \u201cNeed\u201d Therapy?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We would argue that everyone can benefit from therapy. Stress, anxiety, depression (with a little d), trauma, and uncertainty are all side natural effects of being alive and human. Broken family relationships, dysfunctional romantic relationships, breakups, death, work stress &#8211; they all take a toll and inspire the creation of coping mechanisms. Therapy is a way to understand why we react the way we do and it gives us the tools we need to navigate our emotions, thought processes, and habits thoughtfully and healthily.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\u00a0<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/chenaltherapy.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/pexels-mentatdgt-1311518-400x267.jpg\" width=\"400\" height=\"267\" alt=\"Therapy at the table\" class=\"wp-image-6678 alignnone size-medium\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But going to therapy can, unfortunately, still come with a stigma attached. People think something has to be \u201cwrong\u201d with them in order to seek help. This is patently untrue. There is nothing wrong with people who have mental health conditions &#8211; and we\u2019ve already pointed out that one in five people do have them. There are simply different ways for brains and hormones and body chemistry to interact. We call this being \u201cneural a-typical\u201d. Not wrong. Just different.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, there are signs to look out for that you definitely <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">should<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> seek help from a trained mental health professional:<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You\u2019re having difficulty regulating your emotions<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You are having intrusive, racing, or repetitive thoughts<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You aren\u2019t performing well at school or at work<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You have a sudden change in sleep patterns or appetite<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You struggle to build or maintain relationships<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You\u2019ve experienced a trauma &#8211; recently or in the past<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You no longer enjoy doing things you used to love<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You\u2019re grieving<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Your physical health is declining<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You want to improve, but don\u2019t know where to start<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You\u2019re using substances (alcohol, drugs) or sex to cope<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You have or have had a panic attack<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If any of these ring true, it\u2019s likely time to seek therapy. If you are having thoughts of suicide or self-harm, therapy is likely a good long-term treatment, but you should seek emergency help immediately. Call a suicide hotline, the police, or check yourself into the hospital.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\u00a0<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/chenaltherapy.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/pexels-cottonbro-4098369-267x400.jpg\" width=\"267\" height=\"400\" alt=\"Explanation at therapy\" class=\"wp-image-6680 alignnone size-medium\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you\u2019re still not sure, here is a list of emotions and feelings that may be symptoms of a mental health issue:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Overwhelm<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fatigue<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Disproportionate rage or anger<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Anxious or intrusive thoughts<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Apathy<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hopelessness<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Social withdrawal<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Agoraphobia (fear of leaving your house)<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And a good rule of thumb when you\u2019re deciding if therapy could be right for you is &#8211; if you\u2019re reading this article or others like it, you could probably benefit from therapy.
